before I leave the state, interesting fact about Kansas:
Germans formed the largest group of European settlers in the state still being the largest group of ancestry today. In the mid and late 1800s Kansas had German newspapers, churches, businesses and whole communities speaking German as main language. Just 40km of my route is the city of Hays, called the German capital of Kansas.
They even got a German heritage museum and an annual German fair there.
Not only many names are german (Bremen, Stuttgart, Marienthal, hoffnungsau, Olpe, Erb's, ...), I've met older peoples started talking German when they heard where is was from!
The same applies to the high plains of eastern Colorado, by the way.
