Hated that day. Rain, headwinds and I felt weak from the long day before (see updated entry). Just did 100km with just one restaurant, which wouldn't open before 4pm... Lots of closed down businesses again, wonder how far I'd have to travel back in time to see those communities thriving.
Most of the settlements here are co-ops. That means you got a massive grain elevator/silo and some farmers living close by. They work together to fill the silo, sharing machinery, buying seeds, fertilizer etc. to get better prices.
The silos usually got the name of the co-ops printed on them in huge letters. Once visible from far away, the paint has faded nowadays.
There's also a railroad linking all the co-ops.
Was nice seeing behind to curtain of America's breadbasket, a chance even most Americans don't get.
Half way done now. 3000km still to come.
